Video released publicly Friday shows the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi fighting for control of a hammer with his assailant during a brutal attack in the couple home last year

The husband of former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is shown on video battling with his attacker for control of a hammer just before he is struck during a vicious attack in the couple's San Francisco home last year.
The suspect, David DePape, is shown in the body camera film snatching the object from Paul Pelosi, 82, and lunging towards him while holding a hammer over his head. Unseen by the video, Pelosi receives the hit, and the officers—one of them cursing—then storm into the home and pounce on DePape.
Pelosi is shown laying face down on the ground in his pajamas and briefs, appearing to be unresponsive. Later, according to officials, he awoke in a pool of his own blood.
The information was made public as a result of a coalition of news organizations, including The Associated Press, requesting access to the evidence presented by the prosecution in open court last month. The San Francisco District Attorney's Office has turned down requests from media to view the exhibits.
A state court judge decided that the footage shouldn't be kept a secret on Wednesday.
Parts of Paul Pelosi's Oct. 28 911 call, Capitol police surveillance footage, a body camera worn by one of the two responding officers, and an audio clip of DePape's police interrogation, all of which are included in the evidence.
DePape may be seen approaching a glass-panel door in the Capitol Police video, leaving, and then returning while toting two more suitcases and wearing a sizable backpack. After setting everything down, he grabbed a hammer and broke the door glass to create a passageway while pausing to put on gloves.
In current state and federal proceedings, DePape has entered a not guilty plea. He is being detained in custody without a bond. He is accused of attempted murder, elder abuse, and attacking a member of a government official's close family.
DePape, 43, is being represented by the San Francisco Public Defender's Office, which indicated they will make a statement later on Friday.
In the two years following the uprising at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, threats against members of Congress have sharply increased.

When DePape reportedly broke into the couple's house, Paul Pelosi was sound sleeping. At the time, Nancy Pelosi was in Washington and was guarded by her security detail, which does not include her family.
Later, her spouse of almost 60 years required surgery to fix a fractured skull and severe wounds to his right arm and hands. Since then, he has made public appearances while using a cap and a glove to conceal his injuries.
On Thursday, Nancy Pelosi told reporters that her husband's safety was her first priority and that she was unsure if she would watch the tape if it was made public.
I'm not even sure whether I'll see it, she said. "I mean, it would be really difficult to see an attempt on my husband's life, but I don't know," the woman said.
The body camera footage of San Francisco Officer Kolby Wilmes shows police approaching the brick house and knocking on the door. The cops debate whether they have the correct residence during the 20 seconds it takes for the door to open.
Paul Pelosi says, "Hi, fellas, how are you," as the door opens.
The cops at the door are facing both of the males. It takes approximately five seconds for a flashlight to see DePape holding a hammer with his right hand while clinging to Pelosi's right hand with his left, which is grasping the hammer head. At first, the hammer is hidden in the darkness. In the initial seconds, the fight is not obvious.
The officer inquires, "What's going on, man?"
Everything is OK, says DePape.
The officer commands, "Drop the hammer."
DePape refuses and starts to release the object from Pelosi's hold. Hello, hey, says Nancy Pelosi.
DePape seizes the hammer, swings it around with his right hand, and strikes Pelosi viciously with an overhand blow as police officers rush the scene. As they wrestled with DePape and Pelosi lay on the ground, the cops requested assistance.
