Trade speculations involving the Warriors: Jonathan Kuminga, James Wiseman, and more |
The Golden State Warriors' biggest deadline trade since Bob Myers took over happened three seasons ago. In order to avoid paying the luxury tax, they traded D'Angelo Russell for Andrew Wiggins and the draft selection that eventually led to Jonathan Kuminga.
However, that agreement was made after the Warriors were 12-40 and had long since lost their chance to compete. It was essentially a start to their offseason with some cost-cutting financial gymnastics attached. The NBA trade deadline has often been quiet for them when they were in contention, with just sporadic nibbling around the edges.
People in the know anticipate, at most, some nibbling around the margins rather than a boisterous trade deadline with significant roster reorganization.
In all likelihood, the Warriors will keep [Jonathan] Kuminga, [James] Wiseman, and [Moses] Moody after the deadline. Those who know the Warriors' thinking claim that they aren't actively selling their three most recent lottery choices. However, a rival club looking to acquire them would be looking to get Moody or Wiseman on a trade, and the Warriors aren't in a sell-low mindset. This is not to suggest that they couldn't be transferred in the appropriate deal.
According to those sources, the Warriors are more interested in acquiring a flexible multi-positional wing than a second big man. If healthy, Draymond Green, Kevon Looney, or both will be on the court for nearly every minute that matters throughout the playoffs. Therefore, adding a flexible rotation option that may expand or contract based on who else Steve Kerr is employing at any given time would be the top priority.
That was [Otto] Porter [the previous year]. Younger players who suit that description include Jalen McDaniels, Darius Bazley, Rui Hachimura, and Obi Toppin, all of whom are supposedly available to differing degrees. However, the cost would likely be too high when competing against teams who were more keen on long-term contracts for these kinds of restricted free agents.

These factors make the Warriors more of a buyout club than a trade team, according to their profile. That market, which adds a veteran on a pro-rated basis, is one with no conditions and no assets to deploy. They had no roster or rotation place to offer buyout applicants the previous season. They ought to have both during this season.
Could Utah's Rudy Gay meet that criteria? Is there a chance the Rockets might buy out Eric Gordon if he survives the deadline without finding a new residence?
All of this makes sense when viewed from the outside. Wiseman isn't very valuable right now, and anyone the Warriors might trade for in a Wiseman plus draft pick(s) deal (Slater suggests Kelly Olynyk or Jacob Poetl) would only be a rental, as adding a long-term salary doesn't work for a Warriors team already trying to reduce the impending hippo-choking tax bill they will have to pay next season.
When Wiseman was more useful? I would have traded him long ago, yes. But for the time being, that ship has sailed. In order for the Warriors to get something in return for selecting him second overall in 2020, they need to develop him into at least a serviceable role player or find a less urgent trade partner that is still ready to take a chance on his potential.
Kuminga could bring in more, to be honest. However, as I said before, it would only be a rental, and Kuminga has already shown that he is a player the Warriors consider as being a key component of their future.
